Cliff 'Bernie' Large

Career

These days Cliff Large may have reached the crafty veteran stage of his career but he will always be known at Offley as the man who recognised the potential of coloured clothing on the cricket field and strode forth to bat in pioneering pink pads.

Although he doesn’t make as many appearances now as he once did, Bernie still retains the attributes of cunning and accuracy to earn his victims. Large’s ability to make the ball wobble off the straight and narrow and lure batsmen into imprudent shot selection means that he still knows how to get wickets. He enjoyed an outstanding season as Offley marched to glory in the midweek cup in 2002, claiming four wickets in the infamous victory over Shaheen, with a devastating display of flight, guile and outstanding craftiness.

Large will be among the first to admit that his psychedelic pads are the most colourful aspect of his batting. Ever willing to dig in for the team – albeit not for prolonged periods of time – Large is happy to fill the number 11 spot and take his chances accordingly. He’s perhaps less likely to take the chances that come his way in the field but he remains a reliable member of the club as the oldest swinger in town.
