Chris Austin: Austin joined the club in 2003 and, when not missing great chunks of the summer to get married and go on honeymoon, he has proved to be a popular and solid addition to the ranks.

A devout member of the Tavaré sect, Austin is never happier than when holding up an end and blocking back rank offerings from the opposition bowlers. Despite his bulky frame and obvious power, Austin frowns upon the concept of hitting boundaries and prefers to work for his runs, pushing hard for singles whenever he can. He has the ability to drop anchor for long periods of time, content to nurdle the odd delivery through third man or deflect the occasional shot off his legs to prevent the score board from freezing up completely.

In addition to his determined batting Austin has also made his mark as a wicket-keeper. He has won the job behind the timbers on Saturdays and has demonstrated impressive bravery in standing up to all but the quickest bowlers and has served as a capable foil to the club’s slow bowlers. He has showed some quick reflexes behind the stumps, always apologising the moment he spills a chance.
